1910s: Tipping Point
This was a decade of upheaval and change, with political and societal revolutions all over the world. While women in the United States fought for the right to vote, scientific breakthroughs began to reshape the worlds of medicine and communication. In Chicago, racial inequities led to riots that shook the city and left lasting scars. All of this change was followed by the biggest upheaval of all: World War I. Loyola University carried on throughout this tumultuous time and continued to grow and provide new opportunities for their students, particularly women. Meanwhile, as the war in Europe raged, hundreds of Loyola students signed up to train for entry into battle.
