2010s: Connecting Through Crises
In an ever-more-connected world, Loyola students confronted the emergent crises of the 2010s with new approaches to important issues. Taking advantage of communication technologies, such as social media hashtags and podcasts, has allowed students to connect with various communities for support and inspiration. In an atmosphere of increasing political division, Loyola students have spoken out for justice and equality, especially on issues of racial violence, immigration, and women’s rights. At the same time, Loyolans have joined the worldwide chorus of voices—including that of Pope Francis—demanding action to address the existential threat of climate change. Combining their words with concrete actions, such as protesting racial discrimination, volunteering for a local refugee support center, switching to environmentally friendly soap, and pushing for migratory bird protections—Loyola students have continued to act for the protection of other people and the planet, embodying the Ignatian heritage of making a difference as “persons for others.”
