Abstract
In creating his plays Branden Jacobs-Jenkins has repeatedly chosen to rewrite, adapt, or otherwise appropriate earlier theatrical styles or dramatic texts. Three of his plays, in particular, Neighbors, Appropriate, and An Octoroon—described by one critic as a “trilogy of highly provocative and fantastical explorations of race in America”[1]—radically excavate and revise historical styles of performance or dramatic literature to explore ideas of blackness and racial attitudes in contemporary America.
