Abstract
Created in collaboration with conductor Kirsten Hedegaard, this large-scale performance project took three years of preparation for its execution. Supported by Faculty Research Grants from the Joan and Bill Hank Center for Catholic Intellectual Heritage, we prepared for and presented composer Paul Winter’s iconic “Missa Gaia/Earth Mass” in response to Pope Francis’ stirring encyclical on the environment, Laudato Si.
The project was researched over the summer of 2019, and then rehearsals of choreography began in earnest. For the piece I choreographed six original dance works that create a larger narrative or can be presented separately. Natural themes were developed into dance performance accompanied by live singing. The four dance sections featured in this video are:
• The Wolves and the Antelope
• The Miracle of the Seed
• The Dance of the Birds and the Animals
• Our Common Home
This video represents the sections of Missa Gaia that were choreographed and presented in the Newhart Theatre, Loyola University Chicago November 2019
