During his few years at Loyola, Ed Kelly joined the Phi Mu Chi fraternity. It is unclear what Kelly studied during his time at Loyola, but he became well-known on campus due to his travels and adventures.

After his 1927 trip to India, The Loyola News joked that Ed was searching for a secretary to hire to organize all the newspaper clippings he received that covered his travels. They called him "the best known Loyolan in school today."
