Vincent V. Herr in 1937

 

Vincent Victor Herr, S.J. was born on July 2, 1901 in Caraghar, Ohio --a small town 20 miles west of Toledo founded by Irish Catholics. His parents were Joseph Michael Herr (1870-1918) and Mary Ann Herr (born Snyder, 1871-1934). He attended high school at St. John's College in Toledo from 1914-1918. Herr studied physical and behavioral sciences in the USA and Europe, receiving B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. He joined the Society of Jesus in 1919 and was ordained in 1932. He spoke several languages, including French, German, and Italian, and travelled to Europe repeatedly throughout his life. His passport from 1937 describes him as 5 feet 4 1/2 inches tall with blue-grey eyes, brown hair, and a scar on his right cheek. After brief periods teaching at St. Xavier and West Baden Colleges, Herr joined the Psychology Department at Loyola University Chicago in 1939. He became Head of the department in 1945 and remained active in teaching and research until his death in 1970. Herr died in his sleep at the age of 68 years on May 29, 1970 and was buried in All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines, Illinois.
