Education
Herr studied as an undergraduate at St. Louis University from 1921 to 1925 in Psychology, Philosophy, Philology, Education, Natural Sciences and Mathematics. After receiving his B.A., he continued as a graduate student the following year, taking courses in Biology, Mathematics, Seismology, and Metaphysics. His Master's thesis was "The principle of the conservation of energy as opposed to the existence of a vital principle" (1926). Herr subsequently pursued additional graduate studies in Biology, Anatomy, Histology, and Neurology at St. Louis University Medical Faculty.
In 1937-1938, Herr studied at the University of Vienna under the leading psychologist and linguist Karl Buehler (1879-1963) and Charlotte Buehler (1893-1974), focusing on Gestalt Psychology. During the summer, he carried out research at Heythrop College, London and Oxford, and then moved to Bonn for the 1938-1939 academic year.
He studied Philosophy and Psychology at Frederic Wilhelm University in Bonn with Siegfried Behn (1884-1970). Herr was awarded a Ph.D. for the dissertation "Die isolierende Einstellung bei Kontrast-Erscheinungen: experimentelle Untersuchungen ihrer charakteriologischen Bedeutung" in July 1939. In the preface, Herr acknowledged his academic mentors including K. Buehler (Vienna); S. Behn and P. J. Frobes (Bonn); P. J. Lindworski (Prague); L. J. King (Heythrop) and L. Stevenson (Oxford).
