Herr entered the Society of Jesus on July 2, 1919. He studied at the St. Stanislaus Seminary in Florissant, Missouri from 1919 to 1923, and at St. Louis University School of Divinity from 1929 to 1933. He was ordained on June 22, 1932 at St. Mary's, Kansas. Herr took his final vows on February 2, 1937.
