Formation of the Correspondence Study Division marked Loyola as one of only three Catholic universities in the world which offered a means of obtaining college credits by the correspondence method, and the only Catholic university to work in cooperation with the U.S. Armed Forces Institute.

The division has had among its student body servicemen, housewives, nuns, physically-handicapped, shut-ins and others whose circumstances required them to study by mail.
