Fourth Year
Late Summer 1932: Perry pays the same tuition and fees as his junior year. He must also pay a $25 graduation fee with an added $2 fee for the new Student Health Service. The service provides physical examinations for all entering students and offers basic health services for ill students.
Fall 1932: Perry attends the Freshman Smoker to meet the new students and socialize with his own classmates. At the gathering, Dr. Moorhead announces the senior class participants for the Moorhead Surgical Seminar, and Perry is one of the qualifying seniors.
Since it is Perry’s final year on campus, he decides to get involved with more student organizations. Does he want to join the Phi Sigma Chapter of Phi Chi, the National Medical Fraternity? Or Perhaps the Alpha Omega Chapter of Phi Beta Pi? Perry decides on membership in Loyola’s Blue Key Society and Lambda Rho, the Honorary Radiological Fraternity.
Perry spends twelve weeks each at Mercy Hospital, Cook County Hospital, and Alexian Brothers-St. Mary’s Hospitals. While at Mercy, Perry spends one week at the Municipal Contagious Hospital. When he is at the Alexian Brothers, Perry spends a week at the Municipal Tuberculosis Sanitarium.
Most of Perry’s coursework, by this point, focuses on extra clinical and conference instruction in each medical department. He attends a few classes on Radiology, Pulmonary Tuberculosis, and Diseases of the Heart to meet graduation requirements. Perry also takes a Manikin Demonstration Course while in the Obstetrics Department. Overall, the focus of senior year is on practical, hands-on experience with patients.
Spring 1933: Perry takes the internship placement exam for his fifth and final year as a medical student. He learns where he is assigned, and finishes his clinical rounds before graduation with his colleagues.
Internship Year
1934: Perry interns at St. Anne’s Hospital at 4950 W Thomas Street in Chicago. After completing his internship, Perry moves to Granville, Illinois to practice medicine with his father, Perry V. Hartman, Sr. and brother, Clifford Hartman.[3]
