Alexander J. Burrowes, S.J. (1853-1927)
President, 1908-1912
Father Burrowes, who joined the Society of Jesus on August 10, 1872, taught at Loyola before his ordination. After ordination, he was assigned a variety of duties until his appointment in 1908 as president of St. Ignatius College, Chicago. It was during his tenure, which lasted until 1912, that the way was prepared for the formation of the present Loyola University. Musically talented, Father Burrowes set the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Apostles' Creed to music for the Holy Family Church. After Loyola, he became the president of St. Louis University, Provincial of the Missouri Province, and Superior of St. Stanislaus Seminary, Cleveland, Ohio.
