Henry J. Dumbach, S.J. (1862-1909)
President, 1900-1908
Father Dumbach entered the Society of Jesus in 1879. He spent the years 1884-1885 teaching at Loyola and later at St. Mary's in Kansas. Dumbach became minister of Loyola in 1899 and served in that capacity until 1900 when he became president, the office he held until 1908. During his tenure, the College of Arts and Sciences was formed and the first professional school, Law, was established. Other improvements took place, but the primary event was his purchase of the grounds that became the Lake Shore campus of Loyola University for $161,000, and the construction of Dumbach Hall on the new campus for Loyola Academy. Father Dumbach died on December 3, 1909.
