John L. Mathery, S.J. (1856-1941)
President, 1912-1915
Father Mathery was minister at Loyola University from 1903 to 1912 and then served as the thirteenth president of the university. During his tenure, Cudahy Science Hall was built on the Lake Shore Campus, the Loyola University Press was founded, and the university lecture bureau, a forerunner of the School of Sociology and the School of Social Work, was established, as was University College, a forerunner of the School of Continuing and Professional Studies. From 1915 to 1922 Father Mathery was rector of St. Stanislaus Seminary in Cleveland, Ohio, and then chaplain of the Good Shepherd Convent, St. Louis Missouri.
