Joseph P. Zealand, S.J. (1831-1904)
President, 1884-1887
Father Zealand was born in Holland in 1831 and was one of Father DeSmet's volunteers for the United States. He spent five years with the Rev. Arnold Damen, S.J., doing mission work before becoming the head of St. Louis University and then president of Cerighton University, Omaha. In 1884 he became the sixth president of Loyola (St. Ignatius College), serving in that position until 1887.
