Description

A full-page front page illustration clipped from The Chicago Chronicle's Thursday morning, Oct. 20, 1898 issue depicts the "Military Division of Jubilee Parade Moving North in State Street." The view up the street depicts the large buildings decked out with flags and bunting, flags strung across the street, and spectators crowding the sidewalks to watch the military personnel march in formation down the street toward the horizon.
This parade took place to mark the U.S. victory in the Spanish American war. As an article on the facing scrapbook page states, "Not since the World's Fair has Chicago witnessed such stir and enthusiasm, such decorations and marchings and festivities, or such massed and cheering crowds as are promised for the peace jubilee of the present week." "The President and a large part of his Cabinet will take part in the exercises, with numerous Congressmen, statesmen, and diplomats, and all the leading war heroes except those in the far-off Philippines. In its military features the jubilee will surpass anything Chicagoans have seen since the days of the civil war. The city has donned holiday attire such as it has never worn before, the display of electric lights alone breaking the world's record on that score."
Another article estimates that 12,000 men marched in the parade, with 500,000 attendees, 1,184,000 "people carried by transportation companies."
Many of the soldiers and generals had served in the Civil War and the wars against Native American groups. Much of the news coverage featured stories of heroism and the sacrifices of casualties, especially those of the First Illinois regiment.
