The Great Mosque of Isfahan, also known as the Masjid-e Jameh or the Friday Mosque of Isfahan is a mosque of great import due to its extravagant size and expanded function. Originally built in 840-841 over a mud brick mosque built in 771, the Great Mosque of Isfahan is a mosque meant not only to be a place of prayer, but also of public mobility and monumental importance. Over the centuries this mosque has expanded under the reigns of many Islamic dynasties. The Great Mosque of Isfahan is known for its four lavish iwans, two intricately designed domes, and immaculate tilework of which contributes towards the longevity and scale of the mosque.
