The Graduate School was formally established in 1926 with the Rev. Austin G. Schmidt, S.J., as its first dean.

Degrees offered were the Master of Education, Master of Science, Master of Arts, Doctor of Education, and Doctor of Philosophy.

Down through the years, the school has played a significant role in the life of Chicago. A third of the high school principals employed by the Chicago Board of Education and one-quarter of the clinical psychologists in the Chicago area have obtained either part or all of their advanced clinical training in the Graduate School.

Loyola ranks in the top third of all universities in the U.S. in the number of Ph.D. degrees granted and sixth among the Catholic universities which grant doctorates.
